Pierron made an attempt to prepare solid potassium hypochlorite and he reacted chlorine monoxide solution with potassium hydroxide in the presence of CCl4. The mixture was evaporated under vacuum conditions at 40° To 45° C. During the process of concentration, the KOCl decomposed and an orange residue was recovered which was a mixture of hypochlorate, chlorite and peroxide. Applications of Potassium Hypochlorite It is used as a component in detergent industry. KOCl is also used as a sanitizing agent. It is used as an industrial oxidiser. It is also used as a bleaching agent.
